Sexuality at NU is...

NU Students' Thoughts on Sexuality and Sexual Violence on Campus

Sexuality is….

closed off.  As much as this is an open community, no one really talks that much about sex or sexual orientation.  i find myself keeping hookups hidden from most people, and i feel most people do the same thing.  Maybe that’s okay, maybe hookups should be kept under wraps.  Even relationships.  Not that being facebook official is the thing to do (which is annoying that I can say facebook official and you know what I mean), but people are hidden about their relationships.  Maybe it’s because Northwestern is very into not putting labels on relationships.  Labels are sometimes a good thing.

Sexuality at NU is…

Conventional.

I am not entirely sure of my sexuality. Whenever anyone asks me directly if I am gay or lesbian (which can be an entirely appropriate question) I tend to deflect and just say I am bi in lieu of a much longer conversation about the complexities of sexuality and my thoughts on the issue. I have had this very personal conversation enough times that I simply do not want to have it any more. Most of the time I resort to labeling myself something that I do not entirely believe simply because I do not want to deal with peoples’ ignorance. I am tired of having to explain who I am. Can’t I just love who I love and that’s all there is to it?
